Postcard Project Update - Wednesday, October 19, 2005

Ok Folks here's what's going on. I'm going to be brutally honest. This'll probably upset some people, and others won't care.

For the most part, I'm estimating that there are only about 25-150 people out of the 800+ on my mailing list that actually participate in the Postcard Project. I'm sure they have a good time screwing with our victims. Out of that amount, I'm guessing that only about 20-30 are active readers of the blog. That means, that when an update is actually posted, they comment, and they check the site a few times a week. This also means that only about 30 of you will even read this.

The Postcard Project has been a blast (at times) for nearly three years now, but I'm pretty much finished trying to keep this limping along. We have a good two months, then it dies for two or three. I've got quite a bit going on, promoting a new book, designing websites, all theother things I usually do. I don't have time to do this anymore.

I've asked for help, had a few minor volunteerisms, but no one has stepped up and said they'd run the show. I'm not interested in begging anymore, and I honestly have lost the drive (as I mentioned a few weeks back).

I'm blown away that no one with more gusto than myself hasnt already copied the idea. Or maybe they have, I just haven't stumbled across them yet.

So what happens to the coolest prank on the Internet? Well, I may sell it. By that, I mean I'd sell the website, the already committed 'following', the complete design, the gallery, the hosting, and the newsletter (email) list of 800 people that at one time were at least intrigued by the idea. How much will I get for it? Who knows.

The website has been in the Washington Times, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, on over 70 radio stations across the country, mentioned on many others, been on a few TV stations, and is linked on hundreds of websites across the world. I think it's worth something, but I'm not sure what.

And then again, maybe I'll never sell it. Maybe it'll just go away. Or maybe someone will step up and promote the heck out of it. All I know is that I've got to step back and focus in other places.

I'm sorry if this upsets the few of you who are loyal pranksters. I've received some great emails over the last few years, and I've made some cool friends. Things come and go, and for me its time to go, or at least step back.

Will

PS - My Mom is not happy with this, either. She's got plaques, postcards out the wazoo, and memories galore from it and hates to hear what it's come to...
